We discover the world through each other and each other through the world, with the help of mediums that fall within the domain of what we traditionally describe as the artistic and intellectual. Our personal relationships are richest when animated by a shared interest, project, or line of enquiry; conversely, creation and discovery thrive in environments conducive to collaboration. Such environments are predicated on the existence of appropriate physical and virtual spaces.

The institutions which purportedly provide these spaces have devolved into bloated, self-serving businesses, rotten with academic incest and corrupted by endless bureaucracy. The responsibility of doing so must therefore be adopted by independent organizations, privately funded and personally administered.

The purpose of the Penumbra Project is to realise itself as such an entity. Our first goal is to secure a property to be used as a base for various activities including artistic residencies, concerts, events, workshops, and an annual festival. This establishment is to include a performance venue furnished with a grand piano and recording equipment, a library housing an eclectic book collection, spaces for private study, as well as communal areas and extensive grounds. We aim to purchase this property in the year 2027.

The initial stages of this project will focus on:

  • Setting up structural pre-requisites (website, bank account etc.)

  • Creating platform(s) to publish articles and various media

  • Purchasing relevant materials including obscure books and recording equipment

  • Funding London-based events

  • Supporting specific projects on an ad hoc basis

Over the next couple of years we envision Penumbra coalescing into a vibrant living organism, akin to a young hermit crab, so that by 2027 it is ready to scuttle into its first concrete residence.
